Still here

Apologies for the lack of posts lately. There has been a lot going on. To sum it up, had my 25th birthday, I went to San Diego for a week for work, had a project due in my Masters class, been busy catching up on things around the house, went to Tennessee for Christi's family reunion weekend, and of course, keeping up with Landon.

I'll have some more updates to come. Some quick news - Landon now has 3 teeth. It looks like he should be getting in some more soon (thankfully). He is also getting into everything possible. He is becoming more of a handful and is also getting a little attitude. He wants what he wants when he wants it, or else he can pitch a fit. Landon is eating a lot of table food now and really enjoys those flavors over his standard baby food. He still eats his food, but it we feed him while we are eating, he wants what we have. Also, if we are out to eat and it isn't time for him to eat anything, he sometimes will get upset if he cannot have any food. He's getting big enough where waiters will leave him a kids menu and routinely ask if there is any food we want to order for him. Right now, we intentionally order something he can eat and let him eat off of our plates. We have order him some food a few times, though. It's crazy to think we're already ordering him actual kids meals. This is all going by so fast.

Anyway, check back for more updates. I have pictures to post of our trip to Tennessee and some others around the house. Have a good week.

Links of the day

Things have been pretty busy lately. I haven't had much time to post, and tonight I'm not going to have much to add. I found 2 links, 1 I thought was interesting and 1 I thought was something that definitely needs more attention paid to it.

Here's the first link: Car Sniffers. Don't expect your car to smell like anything anymore. Apparently smells are so important they have devoted teams of people to smelling every inch of cars to make sure customers are happy. At first I thought it was a bit excessive, but then I was thinking that I definitely remember people who's cars smelled terrible inside. Maybe they are onto something.

The second post is about brain injuries in football and how they are beginning to show up in a lot of former players. The guy in this case was only 21 and ended up committing suicide as a result of a condition that was caused by multiple head injuries playing football. It is something to consider for your kids, I think. More and more studies are showing a definitive link to brain injuries and football. If they don't make some adjustments, would you let your child play this sport knowing that he or she has a decent chances of getting some sort of brain injury that can cause untold long term repercussions or worse, death?

It is something that is getting more attention, thankfully. Of course, there are head injuries in a lot of other sports. Soccer has a lot, as does baseball and softball. But obviously, football has multiple high speed collisions every play as well as the linemen knocking the crap out of each other. It is concerning. Granted, the extent of the studies is limited due to the lack of brain samples they have, but seeing this sad case where the kid who was 21 had an onset of a serious brain injury is scary. A counter argument is that there have been thousands of people who have played football and only some who have been found with these injuries. However, I would be there are a lot of former players who have the symptoms of some of these injuries, but since they are still living they cannot tell whether or not they have one of these injuries. What do you think about football, head injuries, and your child playing?

Landon Walking

Landon continues to walk. He is getting much better, especially at turning corners and keeping his balance. He can get excited and try to go to fast, which leads to him tripping and falling. Thankfully, no seriously hard falls (yet). Here is a video of him walking around our house tonight. Enjoy

Landon 9 months

Landon had his 9 month appointment on Thursday. We got there on time, but had to wait over 30 minutes because our doctor went to the hospital that morning for some newborns. While we were waiting 2 newborns came in for their checkup. It definitely made us realize how far Landon has come and how long ago, yet how soon, it feels that was. Newborns come in during the morning and they get priority over everyone else, even if you have an appointment, so they can get them in and out before the sick kids start coming in.

While we were waiting, Landon was all over the waiting room. I mean all over the place. They have toys, a small play house, a slide, and a fish tank (up high). He was loving the new toys. Other children came in and were playing too. He wanted to play with them, and did with 1 girl briefly, but being that it's a doctor's office you never know what the other kids are in there for, so parents were quick to keep their kids around them (us included.) The whole parent-parent interactions are still weird to me. Maybe because most of the parents I encounter are older than me. I feel like they look at me and think I'm too young to have a child and they don't want their kids hanging out with Landon. Maybe I'm just paranoid. Landon, on the other hand, loves other kids and wants to play with all of them no matter where we are. I don't have a problem with that, but like I said, it was the doctor's office and we didn't want him to come home sick. When we were leaving, we overheard a father telling the nurse that his kid, who was in there with Landon, had been throwing up all over the place. Fabulous.

Landon had to get 1 shot, and that didn't go over well. After a few seconds of some of the worst crying I've heard, he was fine once his mommy gave him a hug. The power of a mom is amazing. He was back to walking around in the room right after that. It's surreal whenever we go see his pediatrician because he was our pediatrician also. We call him the grand-doctor. He says we are the first parents he's had where both were former patients. He still does a lot of the same tricks he did with us. For instance, when checking in the ears he whistles like a bird and it's always mesmerizing. He jokingly did it on Christi for old time's sake. It was funny.

Landon measured 29" tall and weighed 19 lbs 11.25oz. I was close with 29" and 20 lbs. He certainly feels heavier, but since he's really started moving around I think he's probably lost a pound or two.

The plan is to have Landon off the bottle by 1 year. We have started using sippy cups and he's getting used to them. He has absolutely no desire to hold the bottle or cup himself. He is perfectly fine with you feeding him, thank you. He will grab onto it every now and then, but mainly that is to play with it.

He's started to eat a lot of table food. Landon has realized this food has more flavor and he really likes it. He also makes some hilarious faces when he tries something new and it doesn't taste good to him. Right now he likes a lot of different things. We're trying to introduce meet into his diet and he ate some lasagna casserole the other day, which he loved. Landon also like veggies and macaroni and cheese. He's also eating some of these snacks that we bought that basically dissolve in his mouth. Landon seems to like those. They are small, so we put them on his food tray and he picks them up and eats them. He's learning how to use his fingers. Sometimes it goes well, but there are usually a few on the floor when he is done. He is getting better.

Landon is beginning to do a lot of other things. He is trying to clap his hands. He is learning what and where objects are (so far the ceiling fan). You say fan, and he looks up at it. He is also learning people's names so that when you say where is *insert name*, he looks at them. The list goes on and on. It's amazing how fast they grow and pick up different things.

That's all for now. Check back for some more updates.

More fun with Landon

Ok, so I had this series of "Fun with Landon" posts planned out. The same night as the first video I posted, we filmed Landon doing a bunch of other funny things. I sat down to edit the videos, and for some reason my converting program is only recognizing half of the video files. That is, when I convert the video it cuts the video off halfway through. My video camera records video in some stupid format that causes bloated files and is essentially unrecognizable by any video editing program. I'm trying to figure out what to do about the loss of video when the file is converted, because a lot of the good stuff is being lost. I found another program that appears to work, but I'll have to buy it. For some reason I'm unwilling to purchase it right now, but maybe I will have too. In the mean time, I will continue to work on what videos I can.

Thankfully, some of the videos are converting over OK, including this one below! This was taken the night after we finally caught some of Landon's steps on camera. Enjoy!

He's walking all over the place now! He is getting more stable on his feet everyday. I hope to have more video of him walking posted soon so you can see how improved he has gotten in just a few weeks! Christi and I are still in disbelief that Landon is already walking. We did not expect this at all and we are having a hard time believing everything Landon is doing right now. We're trying our best to keep up with him, but soon we will be chasing and getting chased around the house. We've already moved chairs and tables around and we are about to move the coffee table to another room. Doors have to be shut at all times and anything is fair game for him to grab. It's definitely a different mindset because he is able to reach things you didn't think he could. I know, this is only the beginning. It's all happening so fast.

Speaking of time flying by, we're taking Landon to his 9 month check-up tomorrow. Yea, let that sink in for a minute... Landon is 9 months on September 2. We're 3 months away from having a 1 year old. We've already started talking about his 1st birthday party. Soon we will have our 2nd Christmas with him. There is going to be some serious paper destruction in the Patterson house. Now I'm getting ahead of myself. I will post Landon's measurables (height, weight, 40 time, etc) tomorrow. I'm predicting 29" tall, 20 lbs. Post your guess in the comments!
